Summer Landscaping Advice

2nd June 2016NewsNo commentsFarmer

Summer Landscaping AdviceSummer is well and truly here, and there’s no better time to be out in the garden, enjoying the landscape, working up a bit of sweat and getting exercise while improving your home. So, without further ado, let’s get stuck into some great tips for you to make use of in the summer time!

  1. Check your lawn. It’s easy to assume that lots of sunlight is great news for your grass, but without an adequate water supply, your grass can bake and wither. Keep your grass areas monitored to make sure that they’ve got enough water to flourish – and also to ensure that no diseases or seasonal pests and attacking them. A little shade from some tasteful garden furniture can help ensure that your lawn’s water doesn’t evaporate in the heat we’ve been promised this year.
  2. Get involved – even if you don’t have a lawn. Just because you live in a smaller house which doesn’t have grass areas, or you’ve replaced your lawn with a patio or decking, doesn’t mean you too can’t enjoy landscape design this summer! Adding a little shrubbery or flowers to your outside spaces can really help your home look like a welcoming, homey place to live and to visit. Check your local garden centre for flowers which do well in direct sunlight, and treat yourself to some hardy shrubs which thrive all the year round to prevent summer being the only time your outside areas look good. Try flowering shrubbery to add a touch of colour throughout the year.
  3. Plan for autumn now. It’s true that we all want the beautiful summer to last forever, but a little forward planning can really help keep your garden thriving even throughout the autumn time. Pests and bugs tend to thrive best in autumn, when it’s still warm but there’s lots of moisture and shade to take advantage of. Prepare your lawn and flowered areas with your chosen pest control solution now, before they have a chance to take hold.
  4. Fertilise your summer lawn correctly. An autumn or winter lawn needs different fertilisers than one in high summer. Visit your local garden centre for advice on the best fertiliser for your soil type in summer, as soil types do vary across the UK, and what’s good in Kent may not be the same as what’s good in Ayrshire. Pest control is also a consideration, so make note of any pests you have in your garden and work a control method into your fertilisation procedure.
  5. Mow your lawn the right way. The growth and indeed quality of your grass depends a lot on how you mow it. Mowing with a blunted lawnmower can shred the tips of your grass blades, leaving it looking untidy and unloved. Don’t mow your lawn too closely! If it’s too short, the sun can get to the roots of your grass, causing them to burn and wither. Make sure that your lawnmower has enough clearance to give a pleasant, uniform look with enough depth to protect the roots.
  6. Don’t leave your dead grass lying around. Without aeration and proper sunlight, your lawn can suffer. Raking grass clippings helps your lawn get the air and sunlight it needs to thrive.

That’s all for now! Enjoy your summer, and we’ll see you again next month.
